Every device that connects to the Internet, or any other network, is assigned a unique address called an Internet Protocol (IP) address. An IP address is usually a set of four numbers, with up to three digits in each set, each separated by a period. For example, the IP address of this web server is 69.41.171.224. IP addresses can be public or private. A home network, for example, would have IP addresses for each computer in the house, while only one IP address is used to access external resources, such as a website. The external address would be the same for each computer and would normally be assigned by the Internet Service Provider that is used for Internet access. IP addresses are used by your computer and the web server you are accessing to enable them to send and receive data between them.

This site is able to see only the external IP address you are using for your Internet connection. Every time you connect to a website, you send some basic information about your computer, including it's IP address. Without your IP address, the web server you connect to would not know where to send the content of the page you are viewing.
